FAQs: Your Path to Clarity
Still curious about something? Find answers to the most common questions about our TEF/TCF preparation program. Whether you’re curious about the course structure, requirements, or how it can help you achieve your goals
What are the TEF or TCF exams for Canada?
The TEF Canada (Test d’Évaluation de Français) and the TCF Canada (Test de Connaissance du Français) are official French language proficiency tests, valid for two years, and accepted for Canadian immigration applications.
Is TEF preparation different from TCF preparation?
No. For Canadian immigration purposes, TEF Canada and TCF Canada preparation is very similar.
Both exams assess:
Listening
Reading
Writing
Speaking
They are both converted into CLB levels by IRCC, and the language skills required to succeed are the same. For this reason, our preparation program is designed to cover both the TEF Canada and the TCF Canada, and students preparing for either exam follow the same curriculum and classes.
What score do I need to reach?
The score you need on the TEF Canada or TCF Canada depends on your immigration program, your personal profile, and the number of CRS points you are aiming for.
For most Canadian immigration pathways, French results are converted into Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The higher your CLB level, the more points you can earn.
Here is a general overview:
CLB 4–5
These levels may be sufficient for some immigration programs or minimum eligibility requirements. However, they usually provide limited CRS points.
CLB 7
CLB 7 is a key milestone for many candidates. Reaching CLB 7 in French can significantly increase your CRS score and may unlock additional points, especially when combined with English results.
Above CLB 7 (CLB 8–10)
Higher CLB levels can provide maximum language points and can make a major difference in competitive Express Entry draws.
Because immigration requirements and scoring systems change regularly, we strongly recommend consulting the official Government of Canada website for the most up-to-date information related to:
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Canadian Experience Class
You can find detailed and current requirements at canada.ca
At Learn French in Calgary, our programs are designed to help students reach CLB 7 and above, which is often the most strategic target for Canadian immigration candidates.
How long does it take to prepare for the TEF or TCF exam?
The amount of time it takes to prepare for the TEF Canada (Test d’Évaluation de Français) or the TCF Canada (Test de Connaissance du Français) depends on several factors, including your current level of French, your target CLB level, and how consistently you study.
Here are general timelines most students can expect:
CLB 4 or CLB 5
If you are starting from zero or have very basic French skills, you will typically need 9 to 12 months of regular study to build the foundations required to succeed in the TEF or TCF exam.
CLB 7
If you already have some knowledge of French and are aiming for an intermediate level, you can expect to need an additional 6 months of focused exam preparation.
Everyone progresses at a different pace, and factors such as daily practice, exposure to French, and commitment to the program can significantly influence your preparation timeline.
At Learn French in Vancouver, we prepare students for both the TEF Canada and the TCF Canada through the same structured program, as the exams assess very similar language skills. Our training is designed to help students reach a B2 level after completing My French Transformation, followed by dedicated exam preparation.
Please note that while we provide expert guidance and structured support, we do not guarantee specific exam results, as success ultimately depends on each student’s individual effort and consistency.
How to prepare for the TEF or TCF exam?
If you already have an intermediate or advanced level of French and feel ready to focus on exam preparation, you can begin preparing for the TEF Canada or TCF Canada, targeting CLB 7 and above.
During this phase, we provide you with all the tools, structure, and guidance needed to prepare effectively for the exam. However, it’s important to keep in mind that success in the TEF or TCF requires a strong personal commitment and consistent work outside of class, especially when aiming for CLB levels 5 to 7.
To maximize your chances of success, we strongly encourage you to:
Follow the program step by step
Complete all assigned homework and extra practice activities
Actively immerse yourself in French by watching French movies, listening to French podcasts, and exposing yourself to real spoken French regularly
Understanding spoken French in real-life contexts is a key part of both exams.
Are the classes refundable?
Once you register, we do not offer any refund, please make sure that you are ready to commit to the full TEF/TCF preparation course.
Read our full terms and conditions before registering.
