What Is the SLE (Second Language Evaluation)?
The SLE is the French proficiency test used by the Government of Canada to evaluate federal employees and candidates for bilingual positions. It's administered by the Public Service Commission (PSC) and tests three skills:
Written Expression
65 multiple-choice questions testing grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and proper French usage in a professional context.
Reading Comprehension
60 multiple-choice questions testing your ability to understand French texts: memos, reports, emails, and workplace documents.
Oral Proficiency
A live interview with an evaluator who assesses how well you communicate in French, from basic conversations to complex workplace topics.
Each component is graded independently with a letter level:
ABasic
BIntermediate
CAdvanced
Your results form a three-letter linguistic profile (e.g., BBB, CBC, CCB) that determines which bilingual positions you qualify for.
Most federal bilingual positions require BBB: intermediate proficiency in all three components.
